"I continue to hope and believe that the best stories and photographs are yet to occur. My quest for them will certainly require that I keep my head up and my eyes and heart open as I walk down the street." -Peter Turnley
Peter Turnley, street photographer and esteemed photojournalist, certainly has a resume worth salivating over for people who also practice his craft. With 43 Newsweek covers, an impressive bibliography of his work in Paris & Cuba (to cite a few of the ~90 countries in which he has snapped) and a collection of intimate portraits of influencers ranging from Obama to Mandela to Putin and back, you could certainly refer to Mr. Turnley as “kind of a big deal.” As such, it was both inspiring and informative to have had the ability to see the epic photographer present his work in such an intimate venue as the Leica Store Miami.
Provided that one member of the Bandidos team is born and raised in Cuba, Turnley’s publication entitled “Cuba: Grace of Spirit” struck a particular chord. We could really connect with him as he expressed his philosophies about photography. To note, Turnley provided an anecdote about his experiences teaching photography workshops. He said that he would most likely ask a student of the craft to see their work last. Rather, he would prefer to understand the person and their perception as the lens and subsequent image produced (the photo) are merely an extension of the heart, eyes and soul of the photographer.
Los Bandidos are avid street photographers and we couldn’t agree more. Tremendous thanks to the Leica Store Miami and to Peter Turnley for having us and for reaffirming our passions yet again.
