It was May 29, 1943 and a descarga amongst Cuban-artists would forever leave its mark on music history. A group called “Machito and his Afro-Cubans”, led by Mario Bouza, met for a rehearsal at the Park Palace Ballroom in Spanish Harlem for a descarga, loosely translated to English as a spontaneous jam session. It was May 29, 1943 and “Tanga”, which is widely considered the first Afro-Cuban Jazz song ever officially recorded, came to be.
There are many reasons in which Havana lends itself to jazz; and vice-versa. It is a place both visually and auditorily stimulating to the ultimate. The Afro-Cuban jazz rhythm, habanera, speaks for itself. As for photography, “descarga en azul” is an expression of the passion and syncopated rhythms of Havana that one is only lucky enough to capture as the shutter snaps.
“descarga en azul” is a presentation of photographic works subtly inspired by jazz and its Afro-Cuban roots. In this instance, the blues (azul) in “jazz & blues”, serves as a double-entendre. The azul referenced by LOS BANDIDOS pertains to the intense saturation and gradation of, as Miles Davis might put it, some “kind of blue” that is particular and forever stained in our minds and hearts.
